Technology Auction Benefits Children’s Health Fund Winning B

Technology Auction Benefits Children’s Health Fund Winning Bid of 5000 to Help Underserved Children In a bid to help underserved children, the Children’s Health Fund (CHF) held an online auction of the Ysio Digital Radiology System, donated by Siemens. Bidding for the state-of-the-art machine started at 999 and jumped to a quarter million dollars in the first ten days. The winning bid was made by John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson NY, resulting in a 5309.00 donation to the CHF. The Ysio is a flexible system that allows for x-rays to be taken through the use of a wireless detector and can handle obese and elderly patients. The machine can fit into nearly all hospital radiology environments and will soon be installed in the X-Ray Department of the winner. Co-founded by singer/songwriter Paul Simon and Dr. Irwin Redlener, the Children’s Health Fund’s programs provide urgently needed healthcare to underprivileged children in America’s urban and rural settings. The CHF began in New York City with one medical mobile unit and now has 38 mobile medical units and 6 fixed-site clinics in 22 programs around the United States. *Editor’s note: Acceptance of the proceeds of this auction does not constitute an endorsement of the Ysio by the Children’s Health Fund.

Integrating Haptics with Augmented Reality in a Femoral Palpation and Needle Insertion Training Simulation Abstract – This video presents a virtual environment for training femoral palpation and needle insertion, the opening steps of many interventional radiology procedures. A novel augmented reality simulation called PalpSim has been developed that allows the trainees to feel a virtual patient using their own hands. The palpation step requires both force and tactile feedback. For the palpation haptics effect, two off the shelf force feedback devices have been linked together to provide a hybrid device that gives five degrees of force feedback. This is combined with a custom built hydraulic interface to provide a pulse like tactile effect. The needle interface is based on a modified PHANTOM Omni end effector that allows a real interventional radiology needle to be mounted and used during simulation. Whilst using the virtual environment, the haptics hardware is masked from view using chroma-key techniques. The trainee sees a computer generated patient and needle, and interacts using their own hands. This simulation provides a high level of face validity and is one of the first medical simulation devices to integrate haptics with augmented reality. Index Terms— Haptics, Force feedback, Tactile Display, Medical Simulation, Graphic Rendering, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality Authors: Coles, Timothy 1,2; John, Nigel 1; Gould, Derek 3; Caldwell, Darwin 2 1.School of Computer
